While driving up the east coast of Australia in our van we stopped in a cute coastal town called Port Macquarie. Upon the rocky headland of the coast is a lighthouse that was built in 1879.
Tacking Point Lighthouse is Australia's 13th oldest lighthouse. Tacking Point was named by the famous explorer Mathew Flinders in 1802 when he was mapping out the coast of Australia by boat.
Over 20 boats wrecked in the waters here so in 1879 the Lighthouse was built. It had to be manned 24/7 due to the fact that the light was lit using about 1000 candles.
The Lighthouse was automated and de-manned in 1919 and turned to electricity in 1974.
We woke up early to catch the sunrise at this beautiful spot and it was definitely worth it! A great view from up there and it is also a spot to be able to watch whales migrating.
