The Best Apps for Travel in Bali, Indonesia

Saturday 6 July 2019

We are so lucky nowadays to have access to the internet and smartphones which makes travel SO much easier. Sometimes I wonder how they got by back in the day when people went traveling far away from home.
It is defiantly easier now I think! Here is a round-up of my favorite and most useful apps I think you need for traveling around Bali, Indonesia.

Go-Jek

Go-Jek is an Indonesian born app which has now blown up in the whole of Asia! It is the equivalent to Uber, but even better.
You can order motorbike taxi's for great prices, normal car taxi's, food delivery, massage, cleaners, they can get shopping for you, you can send parcels, large trucks and vans to move your goods, top up your phone, get you medicine, buy your cinema tickets...Literally, the possibilities are endless!

I use Go-Jek all the time. In some places in Bali and Indonesia as a whole Go-Jek isn't that welcome due to the local taxi's who have 'control' of the area, but it is still possible to use them. Sometimes you need to negotiate or know of an area that is safe to pick up. Personally, I have never had an issue with this, except they cancel because I'm not in a pick-up area.
Other than this, a great app, with great prices and super handy! You can also check out Grab - which has similar and competitive prices.

Google Translate

The Google Translate app is so handy for those times when you just need a bit of help! I love that you can download languages offline so you have access to it, even in areas with no wifi or service.

A great feature that this app has is the conversation translation aspect.
You can speak in your language into the phone and the app will speak what you said, translated into the chosen language. The person you're conversing with can then speak into the phone in their language and it will translate back to you English (or whatever language you need).

Another thing I love about this app is it has a photo option. I use it mainly for food packaging or signs that I can't understand. I take a photo of it and the app will translate the words to English - It's amazing!
A must have app for all travel!

Gu Guide

The GuGuide app is great because not only does it have recommendations of things to do and places to go in Canggu, it also has deals and vouchers! I love using this app for free coffee's at selected restaurants and even free access to the day spa at Amo.

XE App

The XE app is a currency converter app and what I love about it is you can use it offline! You can add all your currencies to it and easily work out how much something is. I always find while I'm at a restaurant or a shop I'm wondering how much something is and this is the quickest and most accurate way to get an up to date conversion rate.

Google Maps

Google maps is a no brainer when it comes to traveling. You can even download the maps offline so when you're out and about with no signal, you are still covered! My favorite feature is you can save locations with a heart, or as a favorite or as a 'Want To Go'.
My whole map of Bali is full of these! It's great for when you have found a restaurant you love and you want to be able to find it again.

I also love the fact that the map speaks out your directions so when you're driving on a scooter, with nowhere to put your phone to see the map,  you can have an earphone in and it will direct you.

I hope this list of my favorite apps for traveling Bali is useful to you. Let me know if you used any and what you thought!
