My Top 5 Stress Busters

Saturday 9 November 2019

In this day and age and most of our current lifestyles, stress is a really 'normal' state to always be in. Even though it is not healthy at all to be in that fight or flight mode (which is what stress causes in the body) always, it tends to be how a lot of us deal with situations.

I know I'm one of these people who can easily fall into that state in high-stress situations, but I've discovered some ways which can help me fall back to my chill level and keep me feeling in control and out of anxiety.

When you're stressed, your body responds with a chemical surge from the brain setting in motion the 'fight-freeze-flight' survival reflex. This is your body mobilizing to deal with a perceived threat.
Physically this is some of the things that happen to your body when stressed:

  • Your heart pumps faster to get more blood to your muscles
  • Breathing becomes faster to move more oxygen to your blood
  • Muscles tense up ready for action
  • Blood pressure rises
  • The immune system becomes suppressed
  • Stomach acid increases
  • Arteries around your heart become strained

If you are feeling stressed on the daily, your body is constantly going into this state. Which in the long run can cause health complications due to the strain and decrease in your immune system. Not to mention the mental side of constantly feeling that way. So it is important to manage our stress levels daily and take small actions to keep us in a happier state, so when we are confronted with stressful situations we are able to handle them better and not go into this 'flight-fright-freeze' state.

1. Stop and Breathe

This may seem simple but how often do you actually breathe properly all day? Taking some big deep breathes through your nose and out your mouth can really help to release tension from your body and give yourself a moment to stop, be present and figure out what to do next.

2. Get out in Nature

This is something that can offer instant relief. Taking a walk in nature, down the beach, walking out in the forest...Being fully present and getting that fresh air is so important.

3. Meditation

Having a daily meditation practice can help you in so many ways and in so many areas of your life. I find when I am practicing meditation daily I am much more relaxed and chilled out in every way of my life. This especially helps when I'm at work and interacting with customers, My vibe comes off so much more relaxed which in turn stops stressful situations arising.

4. Movement

A regular exercise and movement routine is essential! Not only for your physical health but it is great for your mental health. Releasing endorphins that lift your mood. It is also a great way to burn off some steam after a long day, which can, in turn, help you to sleep much better. You don't have to spend hours in the gym. You can make a simple routine at home of stretches and light yoga in the morning, maybe a little dance to your favorite music. 30 mins of activity every day is great for you!

5. Cut the Screen Time

It's so easy to roll out of bed in the morning and reach for your phone, even before bed on our phones mindlessly scrolling before we sleep. Not only is the blue light affecting our sleep but looking at your phone first thing in the morning, you are taking in so much information and so much influence from others when the morning is a vital time to set yourself up for the day. Make a no phones in bed rule and see yourself waking up lighter and fresh, ready for the day without getting bogged down with technology first thing.

I hope these 5 points can help you! Let me know if you try any of them out.
