How to Calm Your Mind

Saturday 6 April 2019

There are times when we are confronted with stressful, anxious, emotional and painful situations. How you react can change the whole scope of the situation and the feelings it brings. Calming your mind and taking back control is the key to moving forward and feeling great!

When you're feeling stressed it is easy to let that take over you, your decisions and your outward reactions to others. Here are some ways to calm down your mind to keep you in balance...

1. Breathe - Now this may sound like a no brainer, but if you take a minute to stop what you're doing and take some long, deep breaths. Feel that air fill up your lungs and refresh you.
Breathwork is one of the simplist but most effective ways to heal and calm yourself.

2. Journal - Whatever is running inside your head over and over, let it out. Grab a pen and paper, or even the notes app on your phone and let it all spill out onto the page. Have a brain dump here, it doesn't have to make sense or have perfect grammar and spelling, it doesn't matter. What matters is letting out these thoughts so you can clear some space in your brain to have some perspective on the issue at hand. It will instantly feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders and give you more space to think and feel calmer.

3. Practice Mindfulness - Mindfulness is all about being in the present moment and observing, not reacting. Take a deep breath and take note of how you're feeling in that moment, any tension in the body, clenching of the jaw, any tightness? Focus on your breath and as you exhale, imagine you are releasing all those worries. Then smile. Remember you are in control, always.

"Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us."

4. Go out in the heart of Nature - A walk in the fresh air, with the green trees all around you, will really calm you down.

5. Gratitude - Instead of always focusing on the negative and that "what if's" and the "I wish I had's", start mentally listing the things in life that you are grateful for.

6. It's all Temporary - Distress and negative feelings are all tempory, remind yourself that this won't last forever, accept the feeling and then wish it on its way, for it does not serve you.

7. Listen - Play your favourite music, an uplifting podcast, an inspirational YouTube video. Listen to something that inspires you, calms you or brings you Joy.

8. Meditate - The ultimate way to calm to the mind. Silence and letting the thoughts pass you by is the best thing you could do.

9. Self-Love - Give yourself some self-love time! What makes you feel amazing? Do that. Focus your attention on doing something for yourself that makes you feel great and brings you joy. It will take your mind off whatever is bothering you.

10. Cry it all Out - An instant relief. Sometimes you need to let it all out emotionally, tears can be the best healer. Don't be afraid to let yourself feel.

"Happy are those who take life day by day, complain very litte, and are thankfull for the little things in life."
